The concept of “Fragments” underpins all my work.
I am interested in the stories that they tell when they are viewed singly, (and therefore studied minutely), or when amassed together and a more complex tale is revealed. These stories cover the fingers that stitched, the wearer and their journey through time.
It is the journey that is currently interesting me.
The iconography that I use in my designs evolves from the embroidery fragments that were made in India in the C18th for the export market – they were always destined to travel. Embroiderers there interpreted English embroidery designs to be used here for clothing and domestic ware.
The theme “Journeys and Journals” reflects these ideas and by using paper, paint and stitch with collagraphic prints I link the embroidery fragments to my bookmaking practice.
